Credit card processing and merchant services in Mesa, AZ
Retail sales in Mesa carry 8.3% in transaction privilege tax: 5.6% state, 0.7% Maricopa County and 2% city. Card fees are the other percentage on every sale, and that one you can negotiate.
Mesa's city site lays out the whole retail tax rate. The city's transaction privilege tax on retail sales is 2%, Maricopa County adds 0.7%, and with Arizona's 5.6% state rate the combined TPT comes to 8.3%. On a $250 sale, that's $20.75. If your business does something other than retail, look up your activity on the city's TPT pages, because the classification decides what you owe.
City rates vary even inside Maricopa County. Scottsdale's own rate fell to 1.70% on July 1, 2025, below Mesa's 2%, so a business with locations or events in both cities can't reuse one setting. Our Scottsdale page covers that change.
Tax rates are set by voters. Your processing rate isn't. Say a Mesa business runs $45,000 a month in card sales at an effective rate of 3.1%, and interchange-plus pricing on the same volume would come to 2.7%. That 0.4 point gap is $180 a month, or $2,160 a year. Those two rates are only an illustration; your own statement shows the real gap.
Mesa had an estimated 513,656 residents in July 2025, up 1.8% from the Census Bureau's 2020 base. Arizona has no surcharge statute that we found, so Visa's and Mastercard's rules are the limit: no more than your cost, 3% at most for Visa and 4% for Mastercard, notice before the customer pays, and nothing on debit or prepaid cards. The Arizona page has the sources.
A free statement review puts your effective rate next to what interchange-plus would cost. If you sell online too, our online payments page covers hosted checkout and fraud screening.

Common questions
What is the sales tax rate in Mesa, Arizona?
For retail sales, 8.3% in combined transaction privilege tax: Mesa's 2%, Maricopa County's 0.7% and the state's 5.6%. If your business falls under a different TPT classification, check the city's TPT pages and the Arizona Department of Revenue for the rate that applies to your activity.
Is Mesa sales tax the same as in Scottsdale?
No. Both cities are in Maricopa County, but Mesa's own retail rate is 2% while Scottsdale's dropped to 1.70% on July 1, 2025. A business selling in both needs a separate tax setting for each location, and our Scottsdale page explains the change there.
Is there a limit on credit card surcharges in Mesa?
Only the card networks' limits, since we found no Arizona surcharge statute. Visa caps a surcharge at your merchant discount rate or 3%, whichever is lower, and Mastercard at your average effective rate or 4%. You need notice at the entrance and the register, the amount on the receipt, and no surcharge on debit or prepaid cards.
How much could a Mesa business save by switching processors?
It depends on your volume and how far your current markup sits above interchange. On $45,000 a month, every tenth of a point is $45 a month, or $540 a year. A free statement review gives you the actual figure, and since we don't use long-term contracts or cancellation fees, you aren't locked in if it doesn't work out.
