Credit card processing and merchant services in Atlanta, GA
Atlanta charges 8.9% sales tax on both sides of its county line, and the rate drops just outside the city. Businesses that sell or deliver across that line need more than one tax code.
Atlanta spans two counties, Fulton and DeKalb, and the Georgia Department of Revenue's rate chart puts the city's sales tax at 8.9% in both. Step outside the city limits and the number changes: the same chart, for January to March 2026, lists 7.75% for the rest of Fulton County and 8% for the rest of DeKalb. The difference comes from levies the chart applies only inside Atlanta, including the city's own transportation sales tax.
That gap matters if you sell on both sides of the line. A caterer or furniture store in the city that also delivers to the suburbs can't assume 8.9% fits every order, and a shop just outside the city shouldn't be charging Atlanta's rate at its counter. Set up a separate tax code for each rate you really use, and check the Department's chart at the start of each quarter.
The city keeps growing. The Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate is 529,110 residents, up 8,350 in a year, the 11th largest numeric gain among US cities of 20,000 or more. Businesses opening into that growth face the usual question about card fees. Georgia doesn't cap retail surcharges by statute, so the network limits apply: 3% for Visa, 4% for Mastercard, or your cost if lower, with notice at the door and on the receipt.
Our suggestion is to fix pricing first. Clearo works on interchange-plus, so you can see whether your current processor's markup is the real cost problem before you pass anything on. If you run a restaurant, start with our restaurant page; anyone can send a statement for a free statement review.

Common questions
What is the sales tax rate in Atlanta?
8.9% on most taxable sales, in both the Fulton County and DeKalb County parts of the city, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue's rate chart for January to March 2026. That's the state's 4% plus local taxes, including levies that apply only inside the city. Check the current quarter's chart before relying on it.
Is the rate different in the DeKalb part of Atlanta?
No. The chart lists DeKalb (Atlanta) at 8.9%, the same as Fulton (Atlanta). The difference shows up outside the city: 8% in the rest of DeKalb and 7.75% in the rest of Fulton.
Can Atlanta businesses add a credit card surcharge?
Yes. Georgia has no statute capping retail surcharges, so Visa's limit of 3% or your merchant discount rate and Mastercard's 4% or your average effective rate apply. Give your processor the 30 days' notice Visa requires, post signs at the entrance and checkout, show the fee on receipts, and leave debit cards out.
Do I need a separate tax setup if I also sell outside the city?
Usually, yes. With a second location or deliveries beyond the city limits, you'll deal with more than one rate: 8.9% inside Atlanta, 7.75% elsewhere in Fulton, and 8% elsewhere in DeKalb, per the January 2026 chart. Give each its own tax code, and confirm with your accountant which rate applies to deliveries.
