Credit card processing and merchant services in Lee's Summit, MO
Lee's Summit sits in two counties, and the City's own rate table puts the Cass County side higher: 8.600%, against 8.475% in the Jackson County part of town.
In Lee's Summit, the county line runs through the city, and it shows up at the register. The City's sales tax table, effective April 1, 2024, lists two combined rates: 8.475% in the Jackson County portion and 8.600% in the Cass County portion.
The state's 4.225% and the city's 2.75% are the same on both sides. County tax isn't. Jackson County takes 1.375% and Cass County 1.625%, and the Jackson County side also pays a 0.125% Kansas City Zoological District tax, which narrows the gap to an eighth of a point. The city's 2.75% is a 1% general tax, 0.25% for local parks, and half a point each for capital projects, transportation and public safety.
So before you program a register, find out which county your address is in. A business with a location on each side needs two tax settings, and on $50,000 a month in taxable sales, that eighth of a point is $62.50 a month. Districts can add more: the City says transportation development districts and community improvement districts add sales tax in some areas. Food, domestic utilities and exempt manufacturing can also carry different totals. The table dates from April 2024, so confirm your rate in the Department of Revenue's current tables.
Card fees don't change at the county line. Missouri has no surcharge statute, so Visa and Mastercard set the ceiling on both sides: 3% and 4% on credit cards, never above your cost, and nothing at all on debit. Our Missouri page cites the rules, and the Kansas City page shows how high district rates go next door.
Lee's Summit is also growing faster than Kansas City or Columbia. Its 107,514 residents in the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate are 6.3% more than its April 2020 base, against 2.6% for Kansas City and 3.8% for Columbia over the same stretch. Common questions
What is the sales tax rate in Lee's Summit?
It depends on the county. The City's table, effective April 1, 2024, lists 8.475% for addresses in the Jackson County part of Lee's Summit and 8.600% for the Cass County part, and districts add more in some areas. Rates can change during the year, so confirm yours in the Department of Revenue's current rate tables.
Why is sales tax higher on the Cass County side of Lee's Summit?
Because Cass County's own tax is higher. The City's table shows 1.625% for Cass County against 1.375% for Jackson County. The Jackson County side also carries a 0.125% Kansas City Zoological District tax, so the totals end up an eighth of a point apart: 8.600% in Cass and 8.475% in Jackson.
Do I need two tax settings if my Lee's Summit stores are in different counties?
Yes. A store in the Jackson County portion starts from 8.475% and one in the Cass County portion from 8.600%, according to the City's table effective April 1, 2024, and a district can raise either number. Set each location's POS terminals to the rate for its own address, and recheck when the Department of Revenue updates its tables.
Can a Lee's Summit restaurant pass card fees on to customers?
Yes, as a surcharge on credit cards, provided you stay inside the networks' rules; Missouri adds none of its own. Visa caps the fee at 3% and Mastercard at 4%, neither lets it exceed what processing costs you, and debit and prepaid cards are off limits. Tell guests before they pay and print the fee on the check. Our restaurant payment processing guide covers tips and surcharges together.
Which Lee's Summit sales can carry a different tax total?
The City's sales tax page names food, domestic utilities and exempt manufacturing facilities. For food, Missouri's state share drops to 1.225% on qualifying items, so a grocery category shouldn't use the 8.475% or 8.600% general rate. Look up the food rate for your address in the Department of Revenue's tables before you set it.
