Credit card processing and merchant services in Chattanooga, TN
A Chattanooga business needs a city business license and a Hamilton County one. On the state sales tax return, sales delivered inside the city are reported as Chattanooga sales, not county sales.
Chattanooga grew to 194,144 residents in the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, up 6.9% from an April 2020 estimates base of 181,659. If you're opening a business into that growth, you have two licenses to get before you take a payment. The City of Chattanooga says every business that needs a city business license must also have a Hamilton County business license. The city's initial registration fee is $15, and applications go in online.
Sales tax has a reporting detail to get right from your first return. Tennessee's sales and use tax manual says sales delivered to customers in Chattanooga, an incorporated city, are reported and taxed as Chattanooga sales on the local tax schedule of the return, not as Hamilton County sales. So your POS and online store need to know whether each delivery address is inside the city, not just which county it's in.
For the rate itself, use the Department of Revenue's local sales tax rate map. Hover over Hamilton County and the localities inside it appear, with effective dates and food tax rates. Whatever local rate the map shows sits on top of the 7% state rate and can't be more than 2.75%. Big-ticket sellers also need the single article rule from our Tennessee page: in most places, local tax stops at the first $1,600 of a single item, and a 2.75% state tax covers the slice from $1,600 to $3,200.
Card fees come with a disclosure warning. Tennessee has no surcharge statute we've found, but in 2021 the Attorney General said hiding differences between card and cash prices may violate the state's deceptive advertising law, so show any fee before the customer pays. If you'd rather cut the cost than pass it on, interchange-plus pricing shows what each card really costs, and a free statement review shows what you pay now.

Common questions
Do I need both a city and a county business license in Chattanooga?
Yes. The City of Chattanooga says all businesses required to have a city business license must also have a Hamilton County business license. The city's initial registration fee is $15, and it no longer takes paper applications. Confirm your classification and any business tax due with the city's Treasury Office when you apply.
How do I report Chattanooga sales on my Tennessee sales tax return?
As Chattanooga sales, on the local tax schedule. Tennessee's sales and use tax manual says sales delivered to customers in Chattanooga, an incorporated city, are reported and taxed as Chattanooga sales rather than as Hamilton County sales. Track the delivery city for every order so your return lines up with your records.
Where do I look up the current local sales tax rate for a Chattanooga address?
On the Tennessee Department of Revenue's local sales tax rate map, which the Department calls a complete and up-to-date list of the rate for each jurisdiction. Hover over Hamilton County to see the localities inside it, with effective dates and food tax rates. Local rates can't exceed 2.75%, and they're added to the 7% state rate.
Is a cash discount safer than a surcharge for a Chattanooga shop?
Either can work, since we haven't found a Tennessee statute on surcharges. What the Attorney General's 2021 release focused on was disclosure: merchants must not advertise a lower price than they charge or hide differences between credit, debit and cash prices. Whichever you pick, the first price a customer sees should be one they can actually pay. Our cash discount program guide shows common setups.
