West Jordan changed how it licenses home businesses in October 2025. Ordinance 25-52, adopted October 28, says a home occupation needs a general business license from the City in two situations: when it isn't listed as a permitted home occupation in Section 13-11-3, or when its combined offsite impact materially exceeds that of the house as an ordinary residence. Any other home occupation can still get a license on request by paying the application fee.

The City Code also names the home businesses it presumes go past that line: in-home child or adult care and preschools, businesses that draw more than ten vehicle trips a day, those with more than two employees who live elsewhere, and any business that needs a fire inspection. If you run a home day care or preschool, plan on the general license.

Sales tax follows the usual Utah split. Grocery food carries a combined 3%, while other taxable goods start from the 4.85% state rate plus local taxes. The State Tax Commission's rates page has a combined rate chart and a lookup tool, so check your address there before you set up tax codes.

On card fees, Utah's Division of Consumer Protection expects a surcharge to be disclosed before the customer pays, and Visa and Mastercard cap it at your cost. For a tutor or day care that bills the same families every month, recurring billing with card costs built into the fee is usually simpler than a surcharge.

The Census Bureau estimated West Jordan's population at 116,812 on July 1, 2025, a sliver below its April 2020 base of 116,960. West Jordan's home occupation licenses

Ordinance 25-52, adopted October 28, 2025, says home occupations must obtain and maintain a general business license from the City of West Jordan if they aren't listed as a permitted home occupation in Section 13-11-3, or if the business's combined offsite impact materially exceeds the offsite impact of the primary residential use alone. Other home occupations can still get a license on request by paying the application fee.

The City Code presumes that some home businesses exceed that impact: in-home child or adult care and preschools, businesses that require or attract more than ten vehicle trips a day, businesses with more than two employees who live outside the home but work there, and any business required to have a fire inspection. Check the current code and fees with the City before you apply.

Common questions

Does a home business in West Jordan need a City license?

Not always, since the City adopted Ordinance 25-52 on October 28, 2025. A home occupation needs a general business license if it isn't on the permitted list in Section 13-11-3, or if its combined offsite impact materially exceeds that of the home alone. Other home businesses can still request a license by paying the application fee.

Does a home day care in West Jordan need a business license?

Plan on one. West Jordan's code presumes that in-home child or adult care and preschools create more offsite impact than a home alone, which is the test for needing a general license. The same presumption covers businesses with more than ten vehicle trips a day, more than two employees who live elsewhere, or a required fire inspection.

What sales tax does a West Jordan grocery store charge?

Two rates, depending on the item. Grocery food carries a combined 3%, the same as everywhere in Utah. Other taxable goods take the general combined rate for the store's address, which starts from the 4.85% state rate and adds local taxes. Find that rate with the State Tax Commission's lookup tool, then map each item to the right code.

How can a West Jordan tutor collect monthly fees by card?

Set up recurring billing in the virtual terminal so the saved card is charged on the same date each month, or send a payment link with each invoice. If you add a card surcharge, Utah's Division of Consumer Protection expects the amount to be disclosed before the parent pays, and Visa and Mastercard cap it at your cost.
