Credit card processing and merchant services in Brandon, MB
Brandon is the largest Manitoba municipality after Winnipeg, and nearly every business here needs a City licence before it opens. Interac tap payments carry their own flat interchange, which steps up for larger sales.
Brandon counted 51,313 residents at the 2021 Census, up 5.0% from 2016, which puts it second only to Winnipeg among Manitoba's municipalities. A business here works with the same provincial taxes as one in Winnipeg, plus a City licence of its own.
Sort the licence out before your first sale. Brandon's business licensing by-law makes it an offence to carry on a business, including a professional practice, without a City licence, and it requires a general business licence for every business, with some exceptions. Licences run from the date of issue to December 31, and annual fees are due on January 1. A business that opens partway through the year pays 1/12 of the annual fee for each month left. The City also issues separate licences for home-based businesses and for out-of-town contractors.
The tax setup is Manitoba's usual pair, the 5% GST and the 7% RST, or 12% on most taxable sales. Since July 1, 2026, more food and beverages have been exempt from RST, though the change doesn't cover sales by bakeries, coffee shops, cafeterias, food courts or concession stands. The Manitoba page has the details and sources.
Then look at what debit costs you, tap in particular. Interac's fee page says interchange on Interac Debit is currently set at zero, while contactless Interac Flash payments carry a flat interchange amount by tier: $0.035 on purchases up to $100 for merchants outside Interac's low-ticket and high-volume tiers, and $0.055 for all merchants on purchases from $100.01 to $250. Your processor's price sits on top of that, so read the debit lines on your statement as closely as the credit ones.
Credit card surcharges are allowed in Manitoba within Visa and Mastercard's limits, and never on debit. Our POS terminals take Interac, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and we price on interchange-plus. A free statement review shows what each payment type costs you today.

City business licences
Brandon's business licensing by-law makes it an offence to carry on any business, including a professional practice, without a licence from the City, and requires a general business licence for every business, with some exceptions. A licence is valid from the date of issue to December 31 of that year. Annual fees are due January 1, and a new business pays a prorated fee of 1/12 of the annual fee for each month remaining in the year.
The City also has separate licences for home-based businesses and for contractors from out of town.

Common questions
Do I need a City of Brandon business licence?
Most likely. Brandon's licensing by-law requires a general business licence for every business, with some exceptions, and makes it an offence to carry on a business or professional practice without one. Home-based businesses and out-of-town contractors have their own licence types. Licences expire on December 31, and annual fees are due each January 1.
What does an Interac tap cost a Brandon store?
The interchange part is a flat amount per tap. Interac's fee page lists $0.035 on purchases up to $100 for merchants outside its low-ticket and high-volume tiers, and $0.055 for all merchants on purchases from $100.01 to $250. Your processor adds its own price on top, so check the Interac Flash lines on your statement. Our guide to Interac Flash explains the tiers.
Can a Brandon business charge a fee on debit payments?
Not on Visa or Mastercard debit cards; their rules bar surcharges on debit and prepaid cards. Interac Debit works differently. Interac's fee page says a merchant can't surcharge it directly, and any surcharge fee is capped at $0.25 and applied by the acquirer. With Interac Debit interchange set at zero, there's usually little cost to recover.
What sales tax does a Brandon business charge?
On most taxable sales, the 5% GST plus Manitoba's 7% retail sales tax, 12% in total. Small businesses with annual taxable sales under $30,000 don't have to register for RST. Since July 1, 2026, more food and beverages are RST-exempt, but not when sold by bakeries, coffee shops, food courts, cafeterias or concession stands.
