Credit card processing and merchant services in Fredericton, NB
Fredericton grew 7.5% from 2016 to 2021, about twice New Brunswick's pace. For its firms that bill other businesses, a card isn't always the cheapest way to collect a large invoice.
Fredericton counted 63,116 residents at the 2021 Census, up 7.5% from 2016 against 3.8% for New Brunswick as a whole, and it ranked third in the province by population. If your business invoices other businesses or institutions rather than ringing up shoppers, the hard payment question is usually the large invoice.
Card fees are a percentage, so the cost grows with the bill. A $12,000 invoice paid by credit card costs a hundred times as much to accept as a $120 one at the same rate. Interac e-Transfer for Business is one alternative for big amounts: Interac says those transactions can be for up to $25,000, depending on your financial institution and your account type. It runs through your bank rather than a card processor, so ask your bank what it charges you.
That doesn't mean turning cards away. Some clients will want to pay by card whatever you suggest, and refusing them can delay payment by more than the fee is worth. A practical setup takes cards through a virtual terminal, with invoices and payment links, and offers e-Transfer as an option on the largest bills. Our guide to B2B payments compares the methods in more detail.
If you'd rather recover part of the card cost, New Brunswick allows a surcharge on Visa and Mastercard credit cards of up to 2.4% or your cost of acceptance, whichever is lower, after 30 days' notice. On that $12,000 invoice, 2.4% would be $288, so put it in the quote rather than surprising the client at payment time. Debit and prepaid cards from those networks can't be surcharged.
Hotels and other accommodation have a city by-law to read: Fredericton's Tourism Accommodation Levy By-law (R-13). Check the current version for the rate before you set up your booking system. Taxable sales carry the 15% HST. We price on interchange-plus, a free statement review shows what your invoices cost to collect, and our New Brunswick page has the provincial rules.

Common questions
Should a Fredericton firm accept credit cards on large invoices?
Usually yes, as long as you know what it costs. Card fees grow with the invoice, so a big bill paid by credit card can cost a lot to accept. Offer card payment through invoices and payment links, add Interac e-Transfer for Business as an option on the largest bills, and compare the two on your statement.
How much can a client pay by Interac e-Transfer for Business?
Interac says Interac e-Transfer for Business transactions can be for up to $25,000, depending on your financial institution and your account type. The payment goes through the banks, not your card processor, so your bank's pricing applies. Our guide to accepting e-Transfer payments covers setup.
Does Fredericton charge a levy on hotel stays?
The City has a Tourism Accommodation Levy By-law, numbered R-13, published on its by-laws page. Read the current version for the rate and how it applies before you configure your booking engine, and show the levy as its own line on the guest's bill, apart from the 15% HST.
Can I add a surcharge to a large invoice in Fredericton?
On Visa and Mastercard credit cards, yes, up to 2.4% or your cost of acceptance, whichever is lower, after 30 days' notice. The FCAC says the customer must see the fee before the transaction is completed and be able to cancel without penalty, so show it on the quote and the payment page. Debit and prepaid cards can't be surcharged.
