Credit card processing and merchant services in Yellowknife, NT
Yellowknife's 4% tourist accommodation tax took effect on April 1, 2025, and it covers stay-related charges as well as the room rate. Your booking system and card terminal should agree on the total.
Yellowknife hotel bills gained a new line on April 1, 2025. The City's Tourist Accommodation Tax By-law (No. 5099), passed by Council in 2024, applies a 4% tax to the purchase price of tourist accommodation, and the City counts the basic room rate and any additional charges or fees directly related to the stay as part of that price. Operators collect the tax and remit it to the City quarterly, based on total reported revenue. Exemptions are set by territorial law, in section 70.1(5) of the Cities, Towns and Villages Act.
That definition is the part to get right at the front desk. If a fee is tied to the stay, the 4% applies to it, so a system that taxes only the nightly rate will under-collect. Run a full test folio, with every fee you charge, before you trust the totals.
The rest of your sales tax setup is simple. With no territorial sales tax, most taxable sales in Yellowknife carry the 5% GST and nothing more.
Yellowknife had 20,340 residents at the 2021 Census, about half of the Northwest Territories' 41,070. If some of your customers live elsewhere in the territory, orders will arrive by phone and email. The virtual terminal keys in phone orders and sends invoices and payment links, and recurring billing handles standing orders.
You can surcharge Visa and Mastercard credit cards within the 2.4% cap, with 30 days' notice and signs. Interac debit can only carry a fee your acquirer applies, up to $0.25. We price on interchange-plus with no long-term contract, and a free statement review shows what you pay now. The Northwest Territories page has the territory-wide rules.
