Yukon counted 40,232 people in the 2021 Census, up 12.1% from 2016, and 28,201 of them lived in Whitehorse. That's about 70% of the territory in one city. Statistics Canada counted 1,977 Yukon businesses with employees in June 2025.

In a market that size, card fees deserve a hard look. Say you process $20,000 a month. A rate that's 0.3 percentage points higher costs you $60 a month, or $720 a year, and on a flat-rate plan you'd never see where it went. On interchange-plus, the network's cost and our markup sit on separate lines.

Tax setup is the simple part. Yukon has no territorial sales tax, so your terminals need one rate, the 5% GST, and a small supplier (at or under $30,000 in taxable revenue across four straight calendar quarters) doesn't need a GST account yet.

Card network rules are the same as in the provinces. A surcharge on Visa or Mastercard credit is allowed, as long as it stays within 2.4% and within your own cost of acceptance, and you give 30 days' notice and disclose it clearly. Interac Debit is different: you can't add a fee yourself, and any fee your acquirer applies is capped at $0.25 and printed on the transaction record.

Selling outside Whitehorse, or to customers who call in their orders? Mobile payments cover the road, and the virtual terminal handles phone orders, invoices and payment links. Setup happens remotely, your dedicated rep is a phone call away, and you're never locked into a long-term contract. Our free statement review is a good first step.

What Yukon merchants should know

Surcharging credit cards in Yukon

FCAC says merchants anywhere outside Quebec have the option of surcharging credit card payments, and we found no Yukon law that changes that. Visa and Mastercard set the terms: credit cards only, a maximum of 2.4% or your average cost of acceptance if that's lower, and never their debit or prepaid cards.

You need to give 30 days' notice first (written notice to your acquirer for Visa; notice to Mastercard and your acquirer for Mastercard), disclose the surcharge where customers enter and where they pay, and show the dollar amount on the receipt.

One sales tax rate in Yukon: the 5% GST

Yukon has no territorial sales tax. The CRA's rate table lists Yukon at 5% GST with 0% on the provincial or territorial side, so taxable sales carry 5%.

Register for GST once your taxable revenue goes over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. Below that you're a small supplier and can register voluntarily if you choose.

Interac Debit fees in Yukon

Interac's fee page says merchants may not directly apply a surcharge to Interac Debit. If a surcharge fee is imposed, it must be applied by the merchant's acquirer, capped at $0.25, and printed on the transaction record. Interac says Interac Debit costs merchants around 10 cents per transaction, although your processor sets your actual price.

Common questions

Is there a sales tax in Yukon besides GST?

No. Yukon has no territorial sales tax, and the CRA's rate table shows 5% GST with nothing added, so taxable sales carry 5%. Small suppliers with $30,000 or less in taxable revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters don't have to register for GST, though they can register voluntarily.

Can Yukon businesses surcharge credit cards?

Yes. Visa and Mastercard let you surcharge their credit cards by up to 2.4%, or by your cost of acceptance if that's lower, once you've given 30 days' notice, with the fee disclosed at the entrance, the till and on the receipt. Debit and prepaid cards on those networks can't be surcharged.

Can I add a fee for Interac payments in Yukon?

Not on your own. Interac's rules bar merchants from applying a surcharge to Interac Debit directly. Any fee has to be applied by your acquirer, is capped at $0.25 and must be printed on the transaction record. With debit costing merchants around 10 cents a transaction by Interac's estimate, it's rarely worth the friction.
