Credit card processing and merchant services in Lafayette, LA
In Lafayette Parish, the school system's Business Services department collects the sales taxes for every local taxing body, and since August 1, 2026 Louisiana bars debit card surcharges.
Local sales tax in Lafayette goes to one office. The Lafayette Parish School System's Business Services department handles the collection of sales taxes for all taxing entities in Lafayette Parish, so whatever local taxes apply at your location, you report them there. The state's own 5% (it rose from 4.45% on January 1, 2025) is reported to the Louisiana Department of Revenue instead.
Filing can happen in one spot. The school system's sales tax page points filers to Parish E-File, the Department of Revenue's site for state and local returns, and it also posts manual return forms. For the rate itself, the Department says local rates are available from the Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Ask the sales tax office to confirm your combined rate before you program a terminal, and again if you move or add a location.
One card rule changed this year. Under Act 751, in force since August 1, 2026, a retail business in Louisiana can't put a surcharge on debit card payments. The law has a cure period: once a customer sends written notice, you have 30 days to fix the setting and refund the fee, and doing that rules out a private lawsuit over it. A credit card surcharge is still allowed, capped by Visa at 3% and by Mastercard at 4%.
The Census Bureau estimated 123,311 Lafayette residents in July 2025, up 1.6% from its April 2020 base. The debit card surcharge guide on our blog walks through testing a terminal so the fee never lands on a debit card, and our POS terminals handle chip, tap and swipe on one device. Common questions
Which office collects sales tax for Lafayette Parish?
The Lafayette Parish School System. Its Business Services department handles sales tax collection for all taxing entities in the parish, so every local sales tax at your address goes to that one office. The state's 5% is reported separately to the Louisiana Department of Revenue.
Can I file Lafayette sales tax returns online?
Yes. The school system's sales tax page points filers to Parish E-File, the Louisiana Department of Revenue's site for filing state and local sales tax returns electronically. It also posts manual return forms if you'd rather file on paper.
What if a Lafayette shop charged a debit card fee by mistake?
Fix it fast. Act 751 requires a customer to send written notice before suing, and a business that corrects the problem and pays back the fee within 30 days of that notice can't face a private lawsuit over it. Change the terminal setting first, then consider refunding every debit customer who paid the fee, not only the one who wrote.
How do I find the combined sales tax rate for a Lafayette address?
Start with the state's 5% and add the local rate for your location. The Louisiana Department of Revenue points businesses to the Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators for local rates, and the school system's sales tax office can check the number for your address before your POS goes live.
