Baton Rouge's main sales tax rate is 10.5%, half a point above New Orleans. The City-Parish rate table effective April 1, 2026 lists 5.5% in local taxes for the City of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish School District code, plus the state's 5%. The City's own 2% general sales tax, which goes to general municipal purposes and bonded debt, is one part of that 5.5%.

The table works by domicile code rather than city name. Some areas of the parish have their own codes and totals, and an April 2026 update added a code for the LSU EDD Athletic Subdistrict. Before you set a terminal, find the code for your address and use its total.

Filing is split as well. The 5% state share goes to the Louisiana Department of Revenue, and the local share goes on the East Baton Rouge Parish sales and use tax report.

Debit cards are the other thing to get right. Since August 1, 2026, Louisiana has barred retail businesses from surcharging debit card payments, on top of the Visa and Mastercard rules that already forbade it. A 3% fee on a $100 credit card sale is $3 and allowed within network caps. Put the same $3 on a debit card and you've broken state law as well as card network rules.

The Census Bureau estimated 222,795 people in Baton Rouge in July 2025. Our interchange-plus pricing shows what each card type costs you, which tells you whether a credit-only fee is worth the trouble. A free statement review is the quickest way to find out.

Common questions

What is the sales tax rate in Baton Rouge?

10.5% at the main City of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish School District code: 5.5% local plus the 5% state rate, per the City-Parish table effective April 1, 2026. Some areas of the parish have their own domicile codes and totals, so check the code for your address.

What is a domicile code in East Baton Rouge Parish?

It's how the City-Parish rate table identifies the mix of local taxes at a location. The table lists each code with its local rate, the state rate and the total, and the April 2026 update added one for the LSU EDD Athletic Subdistrict. Report your sales under the code that matches your address.

Where do Baton Rouge businesses file local sales tax?

The local share goes on the East Baton Rouge Parish sales and use tax report, which has its own instructions from the City-Parish. The 5% state share goes to the Louisiana Department of Revenue, so you have two returns to file each period.

Can a Baton Rouge store charge a fee on debit cards?

No. Louisiana's Act 751 has barred retail businesses from surcharging debit card payments since August 1, 2026, and Visa and Mastercard rules already prohibited it. Correcting it and refunding the fee within 30 days of a customer's written notice heads off a private lawsuit, but it's far better to set your terminal so it can tell debit from credit.
