Credit card processing and merchant services in Lansing, MI
Lansing businesses charge Michigan's 6% sales tax and no local rate, so the choices that move your margin are about card costs: what you pay to process, and whether to pass any of it on.
Lansing's population edged up to 113,884 in the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate, 1.1% above its April 2020 base. For the businesses serving those residents, sales tax is the easy part. Michigan's rate is 6%, and the Department of Treasury says cities and other local units can't impose a sales or use tax. Whatever county line a delivery route crosses, a taxable sale still carries 6%.
That leaves card costs. Michigan's Attorney General says no state law restricts credit or debit card surcharges, so whether to add one is a business decision, bounded by the card networks. Visa caps a credit card surcharge at 3% and Mastercard at 4%, neither can exceed your cost, and neither network allows one on debit or prepaid cards.
Run the numbers before you decide. Say a Lansing shop takes $30,000 a month in card payments, two-thirds of it on credit cards. A 3% surcharge on the credit share brings in about $600 a month, but every credit customer sees it on the receipt. Cutting the effective rate by half a point on all $30,000 saves $150 a month and adds nothing to anyone's bill. Some owners do both. Others find the lower rate is enough, or post a cash price instead; our guide to dual pricing vs. surcharging compares those options.
Fuel retailers have one extra Michigan rule: if the price on your road sign depends on paying cash, the sign has to say so next to the price. The Michigan page has that rule and the surcharge sources.

Common questions
Do I charge a different rate for customers outside Lansing?
Not within Michigan. The Department of Treasury says no Michigan city or other local unit can impose a sales or use tax, so a taxable sale delivered anywhere in the state carries the same 6%. Sales to customers in other states follow those states' rules.
Should a Lansing business add a credit card surcharge?
It's legal, and Michigan's Attorney General says no state law restricts it, but it isn't always worth it. A surcharge reaches only credit cards, it's capped at your cost and at 3% on Visa or 4% on Mastercard, and customers see it on every receipt. Check your effective rate first; lowering it may save enough without one. Our surcharging program covers setup if you go ahead.
Can a Lansing business offer a cash price instead?
Yes. A cash discount lowers the price for customers paying cash, so the posted card price applies to every card, debit included, with no surcharge line. Show both prices clearly. If you sell fuel, Michigan requires a road sign that advertises a cash-only price to say so next to the price.
How much could a Lansing shop save by switching pricing models?
It depends on your card mix. As an example, a shop processing $45,000 a month that goes from a 2.9% effective rate to 2.5% saves $180 a month, or $2,160 a year. Flat-rate pricing hides where that money goes; interchange-plus shows it line by line. A free statement review runs the math on your real statement.
