Credit card processing and merchant services in Las Cruces, NM
Las Cruces has six gross receipts tax location codes for its TIF and MRA districts, and a voter-approved 0.325% city increase took effect July 1, 2025. Picking the right code is part of setting up checkout.
Las Cruces had 116,978 residents in the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, up 5.0% from its 2020 base. Businesses selling to them generally owe New Mexico's gross receipts tax, which the state imposes on the seller. It's common to pass it on, and if you do, it has to show as its own line on the invoice.
July 2025 brought two local changes. Las Cruces voters approved a 0.325% city gross receipts tax increase in November 2024, and it took effect July 1, 2025. The Taxation and Revenue Department's notice for that date listed Las Cruces among the places where rates went up and said new location codes had been set up in Doña Ana County. The City's location code page lists six of them, 07-701 through 07-706, covering its TIF and MRA districts, and asks businesses to check their address and select the correct new code.
That's a setup job as much as a filing job. Your POS, your online checkout and your invoice templates all need the rate that goes with your code. Since July 1, 2025, New Mexico rates change only in July, so pull the department's schedule each summer and update everything in one sitting.
We found no New Mexico surcharge statute, so the card networks set the limits: credit cards only, never more than your cost, 3% at most on Visa and 4% on Mastercard. If you add one, post signs at the entrance and the register and itemize it on the receipt; our surcharge sign guide shows what they should say. Our New Mexico page covers the rules, our surcharging program handles setup and disclosure, and a free statement review shows whether a surcharge is worth it at your current rates.

Choose the right gross receipts tax location code
New location codes were set up in Doña Ana County as part of the gross receipts tax changes that took effect July 1, 2025, and Las Cruces was among the areas where rates rose. The City of Las Cruces lists six codes, 07-701 through 07-706, for its TIF and MRA districts.
The City asks businesses to verify their address and select the correct new location code when they file. If you pass the tax on to customers, set each register and checkout to the rate for that code.

Common questions
Which gross receipts tax location code applies to my Las Cruces business?
It depends on your address. Since July 2025 the City has listed six codes, 07-701 through 07-706, for its TIF and MRA districts, and it asks businesses to check their address and pick the correct one. Remember that the rate generally follows where goods, or the product of a service, are delivered, so deliveries outside the city can need another code.
Did the gross receipts tax rate go up in Las Cruces?
Yes, in 2025. Voters approved a 0.325% city gross receipts tax increase in November 2024, effective July 1, 2025, and the Taxation and Revenue Department's notice for that date listed Las Cruces among the areas with higher rates. Rates can change again each July, so check the current schedule before you update your terminals.
Can a Las Cruces shop add a credit card surcharge?
We found no New Mexico statute against it, so Visa and Mastercard rules set the limits: up to 3% on Visa and 4% on Mastercard, never above your cost, credit cards only. Visa wants 30 days' notice to your processor first. Our surcharging program handles the disclosure and terminal setup if you decide to go ahead.
Should gross receipts tax appear as a separate line on Las Cruces receipts?
If you pass it on to the customer, yes. The Taxation and Revenue Department says gross receipts tax is imposed on the business, but when a business passes it on, it must be stated separately on the invoice. Set your POS and online checkout to print it as its own line.
