Credit card processing and merchant services in Durham, NC
Durham County's sales tax is 7.5%, a quarter point above Wake County next door. A Triangle business with locations in both counties needs a separate tax setting for each.
Durham's combined sales tax rate is 7.5%. On the Department of Revenue's current list, Durham County is one of the counties with the extra 0.5% transit tax, which its effective-dates list shows starting April 1, 2013. Take that and the 4.75% state rate out, and the county's own local rate is 2.25%, a quarter point more than Wake's 2%.
That quarter point is easy to miss. Durham and Wake counties border each other, and both carry the transit tax, so their totals are close: 7.5% here and 7.25% in Wake. Copy a Raleigh store's tax settings to a Durham store and every taxable sale comes out short. On $30,000 a month in taxable sales, that's $75 a month you owe the state but never collected.
Card fees follow the statewide picture. North Carolina has no surcharge statute that we've found, so Visa and Mastercard set the limits, and the North Carolina page lays them out with sources.
Plenty of work gets billed rather than rung up. If you invoice clients after a project or charge a monthly retainer, the virtual terminal handles invoices, payment links and recurring billing, and our professional services page goes further. Keyed and online payments usually cost more to process than a tapped card, so the rate you pay on them deserves a look.
Durham's population was 305,561 on July 1, 2025, by the Census Bureau's estimate. Every Clearo account gets interchange-plus pricing and a dedicated rep, and a free statement review breaks down what you're paying now, card type by card type.

Common questions
What is the sales tax rate in Durham?
7.5% on most taxable sales in Durham County: the 4.75% state rate, 2.25% in county taxes and a 0.5% transit tax. The Department of Revenue's effective-dates list shows the transit tax starting April 1, 2013.
Do Durham and Raleigh charge the same sales tax?
No. Durham County is at 7.5% and Wake County, which includes Raleigh, is at 7.25%. Both levy the 0.5% transit tax; the difference is the county's own local rate. Set each location's rate separately, and see our Raleigh page for Wake County's other taxes.
Can a Durham business add a credit card surcharge?
Yes. We haven't found a North Carolina statute that limits surcharges, so the networks decide: no more than 3% on Visa or 4% on Mastercard credit, never above your cost, and never on debit or prepaid cards. Post the fee before the sale and print it on the receipt.
How can a Durham consultancy or agency take card payments?
Most bill after the work is done, so a virtual terminal fits: email an invoice or a payment link, key in a card read over the phone, or put a retainer on recurring billing. Those card-not-present payments usually cost more than tapped ones, so check your rate with a free statement review.
