Credit card processing and merchant services in Greensboro, NC
Guilford County charges 6.75% on most taxable sales, with no transit tax on top. That is lower than Charlotte, Raleigh or Durham, which matters once you sell in more than one county.
Greensboro's sales tax rate is 6.75%: North Carolina's 4.75% general rate plus Guilford County's 2% local rate. Wake, Durham and Mecklenburg counties each add a 0.5% transit tax. Guilford doesn't, according to the Department of Revenue's current rate list, which keeps the Greensboro total well under theirs.
That gap is what to get right if you sell in more than one part of the state. On a $250 taxable sale, Guilford's rate comes to $16.88 in tax. The same sale at a store in Durham County is $18.75, in Wake $18.13 and in Mecklenburg $20.63. A POS or online store that uses one North Carolina rate everywhere will be wrong in at least three of those four places, and an undercharge is still yours to pay.
Card fees are less complicated. We haven't found a North Carolina surcharge statute, so Visa's and Mastercard's rules set the limits, and the North Carolina page has them with sources. Weigh any fee against what it costs customers, though. A 3% card fee on that $250 sale adds $7.50, more than 40% of the tax itself.
The Census Bureau put Greensboro's population at 308,667 on July 1, 2025. We work with Greensboro merchants remotely, with POS terminals for the counter and online payments for web orders, all on interchange-plus pricing. A free statement review shows how your current rate compares before you decide anything about fees.

Common questions
What is the sales tax rate in Greensboro?
6.75% on most taxable sales: the 4.75% state rate plus Guilford County's 2%. Guilford doesn't levy the 0.5% transit tax that some North Carolina counties add. Check the Department of Revenue's current rate list whenever you open a location in another county.
Why is Greensboro's rate lower than Raleigh's or Charlotte's?
Because those counties add more. Wake County, which includes Raleigh, adds a 0.5% transit tax for 7.25%, and Mecklenburg, which includes Charlotte, reached 8.25% when a new 1% county rate began on July 1, 2026. Guilford has neither. Our Raleigh and Charlotte pages have the details.
How can I take cards at Greensboro markets and events?
With mobile payments, using tap to pay on a phone or a mobile card reader. Set the tax rate for the county where the event takes place, since a market outside Guilford County may not be at 6.75%.
How do I know if my Greensboro processing rate is fair?
Divide last month's total processing fees by your card sales to get your effective rate, then compare it with what interchange-plus pricing would cost on the same mix of cards. Our guide to interchange-plus vs. flat rate explains the difference, and a free statement review does the comparison for you.
