Credit card processing and merchant services in Guelph, ON

Guelph's population grew 9.1% from 2016 to 2021. For a business growing with it, the day card money reaches the bank can matter as much as the rate you pay to accept cards.

Guelph added people faster than Ontario as a whole between the last two censuses: 9.1% growth to 143,740 residents in 2021, against 5.8% for the province. Businesses that grow tend to feel cash flow before they feel fees, so put a plain question to your processor: when does today's card money reach your bank account?

Card sales don't arrive the moment a customer taps. Your terminal closes a batch, the batch is settled, and your acquirer makes the deposit. How long that takes depends on your provider's funding schedule and the batch cutoff time. We offer same-day or next-day funding options, which matter most when you pay suppliers weekly or carry a lot of stock.

Then look at how fees come out. With net funding, fees are taken from each deposit, so deposits never quite match sales. With gross funding, deposits match your batches and the fees go in one monthly debit. Either works if you reconcile: match every batch total to the deposit that settles it, and chase any gap. Part of each deposit is also the 13% HST you collected and will remit, so not all of it is yours to spend.

Hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and shared accommodation such as Airbnb have one more amount mixed into their deposits. The City of Guelph began collecting a 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax per room per night on September 1, 2022. It's added to the room rate at the end of the guest's bill before HST is calculated, so HST applies to the MAT as well.

Our guide to same-day funding explains the timing in more detail, and our payment processing page covers the rest of the setup. For your current costs and deposit schedule, send a statement for a free statement review. The Ontario page has the province-wide rules.

Common questions

How fast can a Guelph business get its card sales deposited?

It depends on your provider's funding schedule and your batch cutoff. Card sales are batched, settled and then deposited by your acquirer, so there's always some gap. We offer same-day or next-day funding options. Whoever you use, ask what time your batch closes and on which day a Friday batch reaches your account.

Why don't my deposits match my card sales?

Usually because fees come out of each deposit (net funding), or because refunds, chargebacks or a missed batch changed the total. Match each batch to the deposit that settles it and list the differences. Our guide to reading a merchant statement shows where each deduction appears.

Does Guelph's accommodation tax cover Airbnb stays?

Yes. The City of Guelph says its 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax applies to local short-term stay accommodations, including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and shared accommodation providers such as Airbnb. It's charged per room per night and added to the bill before HST is calculated. Collection took effect on September 1, 2022.

Is interchange-plus pricing worth it for a growing Guelph business?

Often, yes. On interchange-plus you pay the card networks' interchange at cost plus a set markup, so when your mix of cards shifts, you can see why your bill moved. Flat-rate pricing is simpler to read but hides that detail. Our guide to interchange-plus vs flat-rate pricing compares the two in more depth.
