Credit card processing and merchant services in Mississauga, ON

If your Mississauga business gets paid by invoice, phone or online checkout, the card rules play out differently. We set up remote payments that follow Ontario surcharge and tax rules.

Invoices, phone orders and online checkouts follow the same Ontario card rules as a shop counter, but they're easier to get wrong. If your Mississauga business bills other companies, takes orders by phone or sells online, most of your card payments happen without the card in front of you, and that changes how a few of those rules play out.

Take surcharges. They're allowed in Ontario on Visa and Mastercard credit cards, up to 2.4% or your cost of acceptance, after 30 days' notice. The FCAC says the customer must see the fee before the transaction is completed and be able to cancel without penalty. A sign on your office door does nothing for a client paying an emailed invoice, so the surcharge has to appear on the invoice or the payment page before anyone types in a card number. Debit and prepaid cards stay excluded, however large the invoice.

Remote payments also carry more fraud risk, because nobody taps or inserts a card. Our online payments setup includes fraud screening with AVS, CVV checks and velocity rules, and our virtual terminal handles invoices, payment links and recurring billing.

Hotels and short-term rentals have one more Mississauga detail. The city's Municipal Accommodation Tax is 6%, and the City of Mississauga says it applies only to the room or space used for accommodation, not to extras such as valet parking or laundry. Bill those as separate lines so the MAT isn't charged on them.

We price on interchange-plus, with no long-term contract. Start with a free statement review, and find the province-wide rules on our Ontario page.

Common questions

Can I add a credit card surcharge to invoices for my Mississauga clients?

Yes, on Visa and Mastercard credit cards, within the cap of 2.4% or your cost of acceptance and after 30 days' notice. The FCAC says the fee must be disclosed before the payment is completed and the payer must be able to cancel without penalty, so show it on the invoice and on the payment page. Debit and prepaid cards can't be surcharged.

Does Mississauga's accommodation tax apply to parking and laundry?

No. The City of Mississauga says its 6% Municipal Accommodation Tax applies only to a room or space used for accommodation, not to other fees such as valet parking or laundry. Itemize those charges separately in your property management system so the tax is calculated on the room alone.

What's the safest way to take card payments over the phone?

A payment link or emailed invoice from a virtual terminal is usually safer than reading card numbers aloud, because the customer enters their own details and your staff never write them down. If you do key cards in by phone, type them straight into the virtual terminal rather than onto a notepad, and turn on AVS and CVV checks.

Which HST rate do I charge customers outside Ontario?

It depends on where the supply is made. CRA's place-of-supply page gives 13% HST for supplies made in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in the other HST provinces, while supplies made in a province without HST carry the 5% GST. Set your online checkout to charge by delivery address, and ask your accountant about services.
