Credit card processing and merchant services in Akron, OH
Akron sales carry 6.75% tax, the Summit County rate on Ohio's October 2026 rate map and 1.25 points less than Cleveland's. A terminal moved between the two cities needs its rate changed.
Akron businesses collect 6.75% on taxable sales. That's Summit County's rate on the Ohio Department of Taxation's rate map for October 1, 2026: the 5.75% state rate plus 1.00% in local taxes. Cuyahoga County, home of Cleveland, is at 8.00% on the same map, and so is Franklin County, home of Columbus.
That 1.25-point gap catches businesses with stores in more than one of those places. Copy a Cleveland store's tax settings to a new Akron location and every Akron customer pays too much. On a $200 taxable sale, the Akron receipt should show $13.50 in tax, not the $16.00 a Cuyahoga County setting would charge. That's $2.50 extra on one sale, repeated on every receipt until someone checks. Our Cleveland page covers that county.
Ohio builds every county's rate the same way: counties and regional transit authorities may add their own taxes to the 5.75% state rate, and those local shares can change. Check Summit County's rate with the department before each new quarter.
Ohio hasn't passed a surcharge law, which leaves Akron merchants with only the card networks' limits: 3% on Visa credit, 4% on Mastercard, never above your processing cost, and no surcharge at all on debit or prepaid cards. The notice has to be posted before the customer pays. Our guide to credit card surcharge signs covers the wording, and the Ohio page has the sources.
The Census Bureau estimated Akron's population at 189,691 on July 1, 2025, 0.4% below its April 2020 base. We work with Akron merchants remotely, with POS terminals at the counter, online payments for web orders and interchange-plus pricing on every account. Common questions
What sales tax rate does an Akron business charge?
6.75% on taxable sales, the Summit County rate on the Ohio Department of Taxation's sales and use tax rate map for October 1, 2026. It combines the 5.75% state rate with 1.00% in local taxes. Local rates can change, so recheck it with the department before each new quarter.
Why does Akron charge less sales tax than Cleveland?
Because Ohio counties and regional transit authorities can add their own taxes to the 5.75% state rate, and they don't all add the same amount. On the October 2026 rate map, Summit County's local share comes to 1.00% and Cuyahoga County's to 2.25%, so the totals are 6.75% and 8.00%. A counter sale takes the rate of the county the store is in.
Is a credit card surcharge worth it for an Akron shop?
Sometimes. Ohio has no surcharge statute, so you can add one within Visa's 3% and Mastercard's 4% caps, limited to your cost and to credit cards. But it covers only part of your volume, since debit can't be surcharged, and customers see it on every receipt. Compare it with what a lower processing rate would save first; our guide to cutting processing fees shows where to look.
How can I tell if my Akron processing statement is overpriced?
Work out your effective rate: total processing fees for the month divided by total card sales. Then find the fees that aren't interchange or card network assessments, because that's the processor's markup. Our guide to reading a merchant statement walks through each section, or send us the statement for a free statement review.
