Toledo businesses charge 7.75% on taxable sales. That's the Lucas County rate on the Ohio Department of Taxation's rate map for October 1, 2026, and it folds the 5.75% state rate together with county and transit taxes.

Ohio's county-by-county system matters most once you have stores in more than one city. The same map puts Franklin and Cuyahoga counties at 8.00% and Hamilton at 7.80%, so a chain with locations in Toledo, Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati programs three different rates across four stores. Mix them up and the error repeats on every sale. On $40,000 a month in taxable sales, a Toledo terminal left on 8.00% collects $100 a month more than the Lucas County rate calls for.

Toledo also borders Michigan, and the rules change at the state line. Michigan charges a flat 6%, and its Department of Treasury says cities and other local units there can't add a sales tax of their own. A location on the Michigan side therefore takes one statewide rate, and its tax goes to Michigan. Our Michigan page covers that state's surcharge position too.

On the Ohio side, there's no surcharge statute, so Visa's and Mastercard's rules are the only limits. The Ohio page has those rules and their sources.

The Census Bureau estimated Toledo's population at 263,423 on July 1, 2025. Common questions

What is the sales tax rate in Toledo?

7.75%, the Lucas County rate on the Ohio Department of Taxation's sales and use tax rate map for October 1, 2026. It includes the 5.75% state rate plus county and transit taxes. The rate can change, so recheck it when the quarter turns.

Do my Toledo and Columbus stores charge the same sales tax?

No. On the same October 2026 map, Lucas County is at 7.75% and Franklin County, home of Columbus, is at 8.00%. Each store charges its own county's rate, so give every location its own tax setting. Our Columbus page has the Franklin County details.

What sales tax does a store on the Michigan side charge?

Michigan's 6%. The Michigan Department of Treasury says cities and other local units there can't impose a sales tax, so every Michigan location uses that one rate. Your Ohio and Michigan terminals need different settings, and each store files with its own state.

Can Toledo businesses add a credit card surcharge?

Yes, within card network limits, since Ohio has no surcharge statute: up to 3% on Visa and 4% on Mastercard credit, capped at your cost, never on debit or prepaid cards, with notice at the door and register and the amount on the receipt. Our surcharging program handles the setup.
