Credit card processing and merchant services in Cincinnati, OH
Hamilton County's combined sales tax is 7.80% on Ohio's October 2026 rate map, while Kentucky across the river charges a flat 6%, so a business with stores in both states needs two tax setups.
Cincinnati sits on a state line, and that shapes how a business with more than one location sets up card payments. On the Ohio side, the Department of Taxation's rate map for October 1, 2026 lists Hamilton County at 7.80%, which combines the 5.75% state rate with county and transit taxes. Across the Ohio River in Kentucky, the rate is 6%, and the Kentucky Department of Revenue says the state has no local sales and use taxes.
That 1.8-point gap means each location needs its own tax setting on its POS terminals, and each state collects its own tax. On a $200 taxable sale, the difference is $3.60. If you ship or deliver across the river, check how each state taxes those sales before you build an online payments checkout around a single rate.
Surcharging works the same way on both banks. Neither Ohio nor Kentucky has a surcharge statute that we found, so Visa's 3% cap, Mastercard's 4% cap and the ban on surcharging debit apply in both states. Our Ohio page and Kentucky page have the sources.
Hamilton County's rate is the one to recheck with the Ohio Department of Taxation before you open a new location or replace a terminal, since county rates can change from one quarter to the next. Our Columbus and Cleveland pages show the rates in two other Ohio counties.
Cincinnati is growing slowly: 314,367 residents as of July 1, 2025, by Census Bureau estimate, about 1.5% more than in April 2020.

Common questions
What is the sales tax rate in Cincinnati?
7.80%, the rate the Ohio Department of Taxation lists for Hamilton County on its sales and use tax rate map for October 1, 2026. It combines the 5.75% state rate with county and transit taxes. Check the department's current figure before you change a setting.
Does a Kentucky store across the river charge Cincinnati's rate?
No. A location in Kentucky charges Kentucky's 6% sales tax, and the Kentucky Department of Revenue says there are no local sales and use taxes in the state. Your Ohio and Kentucky terminals need different tax settings, and each location's sales tax goes to its own state.
Are surcharge rules different for my Cincinnati and Kentucky locations?
Not in practice. We found no surcharge statute in Ohio or Kentucky, so both locations follow the card networks: up to 3% on Visa and 4% on Mastercard, never above your cost, never on debit or prepaid cards, with the fee posted before the sale and printed on the receipt. For both locations, Visa also asks that your acquirer get written notice 30 days ahead.
Can I use one terminal setup for my Ohio and Kentucky stores?
The same kind of POS terminals works at both, but not the same tax setting: program 7.80% at a Hamilton County store and 6% at a Kentucky one. Card costs don't change at the river: the card networks set interchange nationally, so a given card costs the same to accept on either side. Under interchange-plus, that shows up line by line.
