Credit card processing and merchant services in Spokane, WA

Spokane's combined sales tax rate is 9.1% for late 2026, but Washington taxes deliveries at the customer's address, so a Spokane business that ships or travels needs more than one rate.

Spokane's combined sales tax rate is 9.1%, a 2.6% local rate on top of Washington's 6.5%. The Department of Revenue lists it under location code 3210 for October 1 through December 31, 2026, and it posts a new rate table every quarter. The Census Bureau estimated the city's population at 230,783 in July 2025.

Washington's destination rule is the one to watch. If a customer picks up at your shop, charge 9.1%. If you deliver, ship or do the work somewhere else in Washington, charge the rate where the customer receives it. Ship a $200 order to Seattle and the tax is $21.10 at Seattle's 10.55%, not the $18.20 you'd collect at the counter. A contractor finishing a job in Spokane Valley, which is a separate city, uses the rate for that address too. Set your online checkout to calculate tax from the shipping address, not from your store.

Cash gets friendlier treatment. RCW 19.52.130 says a card issuer's agreement can't stop a retailer from offering general discounts for cash, and since 2026 Washington lets you round in-person cash totals to the nearest five cents. For a lot of Spokane shops, we'd try a cash discount before a surcharge.

Surcharges themselves face no Washington cap beyond Visa's and Mastercard's rules, which limit them to your cost and keep them off debit cards. Our Washington page has the sources, and the cash discount guide explains how a discount differs from a fee. To see what you pay per card today, send a statement for a free statement review.

Common questions

What is the sales tax rate in Spokane?

9.1%, made up of a 2.6% local rate and Washington's 6.5% state rate. The Department of Revenue lists it under location code 3210 for October 1 through December 31, 2026. The department publishes new rates each quarter, so check the next table before January.

Which rate applies when my Spokane store ships to another Washington city?

The rate where the customer receives the order. Washington sources delivered sales to the destination, so a $200 order shipped to a Seattle customer carries Seattle's 10.55%, or $21.10, instead of Spokane's 9.1%. The Department of Revenue's lookup tool shows the rate for any Washington address your Spokane store ships to. Our Seattle page has that city's details.

Do Spokane contractors charge the city rate on every job?

No. When you perform a service at the customer's location elsewhere in Washington, you charge the rate where the customer receives it. A job in Spokane Valley or anywhere outside city limits uses that address's rate. Our contractor payments guide covers taking cards in the field.

Can a Spokane shop give customers a discount for paying cash?

Yes. RCW 19.52.130 says no agreement between a card-issuing bank and a retailer can stop the retailer from offering general cash discounts, up to the percentage Regulation Z allows. If you take cash in person, you can also round totals to the nearest five cents under RCW 1.100.010, without changing the tax you owe.
