Credit card processing and merchant services in Quebec City, QC
Quebec City hotels, B&Bs and shops all ring up GST and QST, and lodging adds a third tax. We help you get the totals right without a card fee you aren't allowed to charge.
On a $100 taxable sale in Quebec City, the till should show $5.00 of GST and $9.98 of QST, for $114.98. Revenu Québec calculates the 9.975% QST on the selling price excluding GST, so the two taxes sit side by side. A POS that calculated the QST on the price plus GST would charge $10.47 instead, about 50 cents too much on that one sale.
Lodging adds a third tax. Revenu Québec's tax on lodging is usually 3.5% of the price of an overnight stay, and it applies to that price only, not to breakfast or anything else supplied with the room. In Revenu Québec's own bed and breakfast example, a $95 room-and-breakfast with an $85 overnight price carries $2.98 of lodging tax, and the GST and QST are then charged on $97.98.
None of this can be passed along as a card fee. The Office de la protection du consommateur prohibits any charge for paying by debit or credit card, so what you pay to accept cards comes out of your margin. That's the case for interchange-plus pricing: you see what each card actually costs, with nothing hidden in a blended rate.
The Québec census metropolitan area grew 4.1% between 2016 and 2021, to 839,311 people, and we work with businesses across it remotely. A free statement review is a good place to start, and our Quebec page has the province-wide rules.

Common questions
How do I add the lodging tax to a hotel bill in Quebec City?
Calculate the 3.5% tax on lodging on the price of the overnight stay only, not on breakfast or anything else supplied with the room, even when it's included in the price. Then charge the GST and QST on the total that includes the lodging tax. Revenu Québec's billing examples show each step line by line.
How is QST calculated at the till?
On the selling price before GST. Revenu Québec calculates the 9.975% QST on the price excluding the 5% GST, so the two taxes sit side by side. A $50 sale carries $2.50 of GST and $4.99 of QST, for $57.49.
Can I charge guests a fee for paying by credit card?
No. Quebec prohibits any fee for paying by debit or credit card, and the Office de la protection du consommateur says informing the customer in advance doesn't make it legal. Build your card costs into your room rates and prices instead, and keep those costs down with pricing you can check line by line.
Can I take payment from guests before they arrive?
Yes. Send a payment link or invoice from a virtual terminal, and the guest enters their own card details online. That keeps card numbers out of your inbox and your phone notes, which also makes PCI compliance easier.
