Credit card processing and merchant services in Trois-Rivières, QC
Trois-Rivières merchants can't add a fee for paying by card, so the cost of every tap stays with them. Contactless debit is often the cheapest tap they take.
Trois-Rivières had 139,163 residents at the 2021 Census, up 3.5% from 2016, which made it the ninth-largest census subdivision in Quebec. Like every merchant in the province, a business there can't charge customers a fee for paying by debit or credit card. The Office de la protection du consommateur says so plainly, and it adds that warning customers first doesn't make the fee legal. The useful question, then, is which payments cost you least.
Contactless debit is a good place to start. Interac's fee page sets interchange on Interac Flash as a flat amount per tap, by tier: $0.035 on purchases up to $100 for merchants outside its low-ticket and high-volume tiers, and $0.055 for all merchants on purchases from $100.01 to $250. Credit card interchange is a percentage instead. If a credit card's interchange were 1.5%, a $40 purchase would cost 60 cents in interchange, against 3.5 cents for the Flash tap. Your processor sets the final price, but on interchange-plus you see the interchange line as it really is.
How much a customer can tap is up to their bank. Interac's FAQ says transaction limits are set at up to $250 per transaction, and each bank or credit union sets its own per-transaction and cumulative limits. Keep chip and PIN ready for anything larger. Our guide to Interac Flash explains the rest.
Hotels, inns and B&Bs in Trois-Rivières charge Revenu Québec's tax on lodging, which applies in the Mauricie tourism region. It's usually 3.5% of the price of an overnight stay, worked out on that price alone, and the GST and QST are then charged on a total that includes it.
Receipts go in French under the Charter of the French language. We work with Trois-Rivières businesses remotely, with no long-term contract. Start with a free statement review, and see our Quebec page for the provincial rules.

Tax on lodging in the Mauricie
Revenu Québec lists the Mauricie among the Québec tourism regions where the tax on lodging applies. The tax is usually 3.5% of the price of an overnight stay, calculated on that price only and not on breakfast or other items supplied with the room. The lodging tax is then part of the total on which GST and QST are charged.

Common questions
What does a contactless debit tap cost a Trois-Rivières business?
Interac's fee page sets Interac Flash interchange per transaction, not as a percentage: $0.035 on purchases up to $100 for merchants outside its low-ticket and high-volume tiers, and $0.055 for all merchants from $100.01 to $250. Your processor adds its own price on top, so check what your statement charges for each Flash transaction.
Can I charge customers a fee for paying with Interac or a credit card?
No. Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur prohibits any fee for paying by debit or credit card, and posting a notice or warning the customer doesn't make it legal. That covers Interac as well, so the acquirer-applied debit fee Interac allows in other provinces isn't an option here.
Do Trois-Rivières hotels and B&Bs charge the tax on lodging?
Establishments subject to it do. Revenu Québec lists the Mauricie among the tourism regions where the tax on lodging applies, usually at 3.5% of the price of an overnight stay. It's calculated on the overnight price only, not on breakfast, and the GST and QST are charged on the total that includes it.
Why won't a customer's card tap on a larger purchase?
Usually because of a limit set by their bank. Interac's FAQ says contactless transactions are limited to up to $250 each, and each financial institution sets its own per-transaction and cumulative limits. When a tap is refused for that reason, the customer can usually insert the card instead.
