Credit card processing and merchant services in Austin, TX
Austin topped a million residents in the Census Bureau 2025 estimate. Whether you sell at a counter, online or both, here is how Texas taxes those sales and what fair card pricing looks like.
The Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate put Austin at 1,002,632 people, up 4.6% since 2020, and the 2022 Economic Census counted $31,143 in retail sales per resident. If you sell over the counter and through a website, Texas taxes the two channels by a rule worth knowing before you set up checkout.
Start with the rate. The Comptroller lists Austin at 8.25%: 6.25% for the state, 1% for the city and 1% for the Austin MTA. Then the sourcing rule. Local sales tax in Texas generally follows the seller's place of business. The Comptroller's seller guide says an order placed in person is taxed at that place of business, and an order received somewhere else but filled from a Texas place of business is taxed where it's filled. If your web orders ship from your Austin store, read the guide's examples, or ask your tax adviser, before you set the rate in your online checkout. A third-party warehouse can change the answer.
Surcharging is murkier than tax. The credit card ban is still written into the Business and Commerce Code, the 2018 federal ruling only protected merchants charging no more than their swipe fees, and debit card fees are banned outright. Our Texas page covers it with sources. For most Austin merchants we'd rather lower the cost of acceptance than add a fee: online payments with AVS, CVV and velocity-rule fraud screening, countertop and wireless POS terminals, and interchange-plus pricing across both.

Common questions
What sales tax rate applies in Austin?
8.25%. The Comptroller's city rate table lists the City of Austin at 1% and the Austin MTA at 1%, on top of the 6.25% state rate. That is the Texas maximum, so a sale at an Austin location never carries more.
How do I tax online orders I ship from my Austin store?
Texas generally ties local sales tax to your place of business. The Comptroller's seller guide says an order received somewhere other than a Texas place of business but filled from one is taxed where it's filled, which for an Austin store means 8.25%. Third-party warehouses change the answer, so check the guide or a tax adviser before you set up shipping.
Can an Austin business add a credit card surcharge?
Texas still bans credit card surcharges in its statute. A 2018 federal court decision shielded merchants whose surcharges stayed at or below their swipe fees, while the Attorney General says the ban can still be enforced in some contexts. Debit card surcharges are banned outright. If you're considering it, talk to a Texas attorney first; our surcharging program covers disclosure and setup if you go ahead.
