Credit card processing and merchant services in Corpus Christi, TX
Corpus Christi's 8.25% sales tax has four parts, including a crime control district tax in place citywide since 2010. For repair shops with big tickets, Texas card fee rules matter more.
Corpus Christi builds its 8.25% sales tax from four pieces. The state takes 6.25%. The Comptroller lists 1.375% for the City of Corpus Christi, 1/8% for the Corpus Christi crime control district, which has covered the whole city since July 1, 2010, and 1/2% for the Corpus Christi MTA, collected since January 1, 1986. For a sale at a city location, your terminal only needs the total.
The MTA piece reaches past the city line. The Comptroller's transit tax list names the unincorporated areas of Nueces County as participants along with the city, so a shop outside city limits there still collects the MTA's half cent, without the city and crime district shares. Look up the full rate for any second address before you copy your settings over.
The Census Bureau estimated 317,247 residents in July 2025. Say you run an auto repair or body shop in town. An $1,800 job is a big card charge, and passing the fee along is tempting. Texas makes that hard: debit and stored value card surcharges are banned outright, and the credit card ban is still in the statute, with a 2018 federal ruling protecting only fees at or below cost. Our Texas page explains the details. The statute's definition of a surcharge leaves out a discount for paying cash, which makes a cash discount the safer route.
Most of the savings are in what you pay. On interchange-plus pricing, a large repair ticket shows its real interchange cost, with our markup on a separate line. If customers read you a card number when they approve the work, a virtual terminal takes the payment without a reader. Our automotive page covers shop setups, and a free statement review shows where your current rate stands.

Common questions
What are the four parts of the Corpus Christi sales tax?
The 6.25% state rate, 1.375% for the City of Corpus Christi, 1/8% for the Corpus Christi crime control district and 1/2% for the Corpus Christi MTA, according to the Comptroller's rate lists. Together they come to 8.25%, the Texas maximum. The crime control district tax has applied citywide since July 1, 2010.
Do I collect the transit tax if my shop is outside Corpus Christi city limits?
If it's in an unincorporated part of Nueces County, yes. The Comptroller lists those areas as participants in the Corpus Christi MTA, which has collected 1/2% since January 1, 1986. The city and crime district shares won't apply there, so look up the full rate for that address before you set your terminal.
Can a Corpus Christi repair shop charge more when customers pay by card?
Not on debit cards: Texas bans debit and stored value card surcharges, and Visa and Mastercard do too. The credit card surcharge ban is still in the statute, and a 2018 ruling protected only fees at or below cost. A genuine cash discount sits outside the statute's definition of a surcharge. Get legal advice before you post any fee.
How do I take payment when a customer approves a repair over the phone?
Key the card into a virtual terminal while the customer is on the line, or email an invoice with a payment link they can pay from their phone. When they pick up the vehicle, a countertop or wireless terminal handles chip and tap. All of it runs on the same interchange-plus pricing.
