Credit card processing and merchant services in Plano, TX
Plano pays into the same Dallas MTA transit tax as Dallas, so stores in both cities charge 8.25%. For firms that bill other businesses, getting paid on invoices is the bigger setup job.
Plano shares its transit tax with Dallas. The Comptroller lists Plano among the participating cities in the Dallas MTA, which has collected 1% since January 1, 1984, and its city rate table shows another 1% for the City of Plano. Add the 6.25% state rate and a sale at a Plano location carries 8.25%, the Texas maximum and the same total Dallas charges.
The Census Bureau estimated 293,028 residents in July 2025. If your company sells to other businesses, though, the invoice matters more than the register. Card payments on large invoices add up quickly. At a hypothetical all-in cost of 2.5%, a client paying a $6,500 invoice by card costs you $162.50, and that is usually when the idea of a card fee comes up.
Texas doesn't make that easy. Section 604A.0021 of the Business and Commerce Code says a seller may not surcharge a buyer who uses a credit card, and a 2018 federal ruling protected only surcharges at or below cost. Section 604A.002 bans surcharges on debit and stored value cards outright. We haven't found an exception for sales to other businesses; the exemptions are for government entities and for private schools that take cards for fees. Our Texas page explains where the courts left it.
So the practical work is lowering the cost and getting paid sooner. A virtual terminal sends invoices and payment links and runs recurring billing for retainers. Interchange-plus pricing shows the interchange on corporate and purchasing cards on its own line, so you can see what those payments really cost. Our professional services page covers firm setups, and a free statement review puts real numbers on your current rate.

Common questions
Does Plano charge the same sales tax as Dallas?
Yes, 8.25% in both. The Comptroller lists the City of Plano at 1% and Plano as a participating city in the Dallas MTA, which takes another 1% and has since January 1, 1984. Dallas splits its local 2% the same way, so customers in both cities pay the same total.
Can a Plano company add a surcharge to card payments on invoices?
Be careful. Texas still bans credit card surcharges in its statute, with a 2018 federal ruling that protected only fees at or below cost, and it bans debit and stored value card surcharges outright. We have not found an exception for sales to other businesses. Talk to a Texas attorney before you add a card fee to an invoice.
How can clients pay a Plano firm's invoice by card?
Email the invoice with a payment link, take the card number by phone through a virtual terminal, or set up recurring billing for monthly retainers. Our guide to payment links explains how they work, and the B2B payments guide covers larger invoices between companies.
Why do business cards cost more to accept than personal debit cards?
Card networks set separate interchange categories for commercial, corporate and purchasing cards, and those rates are usually well above what regulated consumer debit costs. On a flat-rate plan you never see the difference. On interchange-plus, each card's interchange shows at cost with our markup listed separately, so a free statement review can show where your money goes.
